Story of a Beneficiary

Name: Won YonKwang
Country: South Korea
Student: Master in Divinity 2019

My name is Won YonKwang from South Korea. I used to work with a Mission agency called Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in Korea. I had served in missions for about ten years but did not have the opportunity to go for theological education until God led me to study in Singapore. When I decided to go to Baptist Theological Seminary (BTS) in 2015 with my wife, Jeong JinOk and two children, daughter Won SeoRin (age 11) and son Won SeoYul (age 8), it was a big challenge for me. I have been to many countries for short-term missions but I have never studied abroad. I strongly believe that God is our provider and have experienced God’s provision in Korea. However, whenever I faced obstacles and difficulties especially financial needs during my times of study here, I often saw my real faith, which seem rather small. This is especially so when I could not buy what my children wanted. I felt sorry for my family that I was not a good father who could provide for them.

However, when I look back at my BTS journey, I realized that I have experienced a lot of God’s love through the BTS family in my fellow students, lecturers and even staffs. I can speak with confidence and my family is a witness of God’s grace. When my children needed clothes, someone whom we do not know sent us clothes for them. When my wife said that we do not have enough food, we humbly prayed to God and He kindly answered our prayers that someone would help us financially to meet our needs.

Every day, my family can live by the supply of God. Through this, my children also experienced God so I really thank Jehovah Jireh, which means “The Lord Will Provide.” I am also very thankful to BTS for the scholarship I am receiving from the school. This is very encouraging to me in my study and ministry. I am not just learning about God, but experiencing Him every day. Therefore, I will not be disappointed even though difficulties still come, but I will rejoice in God.

Currently, I have finished my Bachelor of Theology programme. I am upgrading my studies to do a Masters in Divinity degree. I will stay in BTS for another one and a half years. When I have finished my studies in Singapore, my family and I will go to the mission field as missionaries. I want to take the gospel to all the nations and share with them what I have learned and experienced of God’s grace at BTS. I believe that my God is faithful, so I will praise and exalt His name all my entire life.
